Discussion on PTSD topic: ptsd and the military statistics
Hi MindfulMentor,
You're right; military service can increase the risk for PTSD due to the exposure to traumatic events. According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, about 11-20% of veterans who served in Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom have PTSD in a given year. This number is even higher, about 12%, for Gulf War veterans. For veterans of the Vietnam War, the rate is 30%.
